Hawaiian Electric Company, Inc.

Hawaiian Electric Company, Inc. may be the only electric utility in the United States inspired to go into business by the vision of a king.

David Kalakaua, monarch of the Kingdom of Hawaii, was known for his scientific bent and insatiable curiosity for modern devices. In an era of gas lamps, Kalakaua recognized the potential of electricity and helped pioneer its introduction to the Hawaiian Kingdom.

First incorporated in 1891, Hawaiian Electric has provided the energy that has fueled the islands' development throughout its colorful history.

Hawaiian Electric and its subsidiaries, Hawaii Electric Light Company, Inc. on the Big Island of Hawaii and Maui Electric Company, Ltd. that serves the islands of Maui, Molokai and Lanai, collectively provide electricity for 95% of Hawaii’s population.  Hawaiian Electric remains one of the few locally owned and operated major companies in the state, employing over 2,000 people.

Unlike electric utilities on the continental U.S., the Hawaiian Electric utilities operate as stand-alone island systems without interconnections. Without the ability to tap into the electric grid for backup, Hawaiian Electric must plan for and build a higher standard of reliability into its system.

The company has a strategic focus aimed at meeting Hawaii’s growing energy needs through a combination of diverse actions.  Hawaiian Electric is a strong supporter of alternate energy sources, with an estimated 7% of consolidated sales from myriad renewable energy sources such as wind, biomass, geothermal, and hydro, and a firm commitment to begin using renewable biofuels for power generation.  It also sponsors aggressive energy efficiency and conservation programs, including the largest solar water heating program in the nation.

In keeping with its long history of community involvement, Hawaiian Electric is proud to be a supporter of the Extreme Home Makeover program.  In addition to expediting the electrical hookups for this special new home, Hawaiian Electric provided technical advice on ways to incorporate energy efficient features, including solar water heating, into the home. And thanks to the generosity of the building contractor, the Hawaiian Electric $1,000 solar water heating rebate will be donated to this deserving family.
